Redact PDF

Permanently covers the words and personal data you choose with black boxes. The hidden text is truly removed from the file; everything runs in your browser.

Not case-sensitive. At least 2 characters.

Find and redact automatically

For safety, redacted pages are converted to images, so their text is no longer selectable or searchable. Other pages stay as they are. Only PDFs with selectable text can be searched; run OCR first on scans. Always check the result before sending it.

The redaction tool finds names, ID numbers, IBANs, phone numbers, email addresses or any words you type and permanently covers them with black boxes. Use it to share documents without personal data, send sample documents to an authority, or share reports without customer details. In many programs “redaction” only places a black shape on top, and the text underneath can still be copied. This tool converts redacted pages to high-resolution images, so the hidden text is not left in the file at all. Pages without matches stay untouched and document information (title, author) is cleared. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Type the words to redact, one per line, or tick the ID, IBAN, phone and email options.
  3. Click Prepare.
  4. The redacted PDF downloads with a count of redacted areas. Open and check it before sending.

Frequently asked questions

Is the redacted text really removed?

Yes. The redacted page becomes an image with the black box drawn into it. No text layer remains, so it cannot be read by copying, searching or removing the box.

Can I redact a scanned document?

Searching needs selectable text. Make the scan searchable with OCR first, then redact.

What if something is missed?

Only the terms you type and the types you tick are found. Spelling variants, text inside images and handwriting are not detected. Always check page by page before sending.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Search and redaction run in your browser.
