Protect PDF with a Password
The Protect PDF tool adds an open password so that only people who know it can open the file. It is useful before sharing IDs, payslips, medical reports, contracts or customer lists by email or cloud storage. Encryption uses AES-256, the strongest method in the PDF standard, and covers the whole file: page content, images and document information. You can also restrict printing, copying text and editing. Everything happens in your browser; neither your file nor your password is sent to a server. The result downloads with “_sifreli” added to the name.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF file.
- Enter the open password twice.
- Optionally tick the printing, copying or editing restrictions.
- Click Prepare; the protected PDF downloads.
Frequently asked questions
What if I forget the password?
The file cannot be opened. The password is not stored anywhere, so it cannot be recovered. Write it down somewhere safe and keep your original file.
How secure is it?
The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method in the PDF standard. Security mostly depends on the password: choose a long one with letters, numbers and symbols.
Will the PDF open everywhere?
Yes. Adobe Acrobat Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, macOS Preview and phone PDF readers ask for the password and open the file.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes. If you know the password, use Remove PDF Password to save an unlocked copy.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Encryption runs in your browser. Your file and password are never sent to a server and are cleared from memory when you close the page.
